McDonnell CF-101B Voodoo Manufacturer: Revell Germany scale: 1:72 The original Originally as escort fighters for the protection of the US atomic bombers meant, the Voodoo became late carrier of atomic weapons, the air-defense hunter as well as the reconnaissance aircraft. The development of the Voodoo was, differently than those of the other machines from the "hundert-series" very lengthy and was subject to continuous changes in planning. At the beginning of as Xp-88 (F-88) developed the first prototype flew to extensive changes in the range of the bearing areas and air intakes on 20 October 1948 for the first time. This was already 6 months prevents the plan, and further delays should follow. Approximately two years later the second prototype flies, this already with the Westinghouse afterburner engines which followed gave to the machine substantially better achievements. The entire F-88-Projekt was adjusted however 1950 due to a change in operational planning: The F-84E should take over the tasks of the F-88. The SAC was however not particularly inspired by this decision, and so 1951 a new advertisement were discharged to the industry: General operational requirement 101 (GOR.101). To these itself among other things also again McDonnell involved with a revised draft of the F-88: the F-101 Voodoo. On 15 January 1952 this received then also the addition. The first prototype, which flew F-101a, at the 29.September 1954 the first time following became 77 copies of the aversion and 47 of the C-version built, which by the maximum stress of the cell differed: with A this was loadable with 6,33 g, with C with 7,33 g. Beside many other versions was appropriate the main production of the Voodoo however clearly in the F-101B, for a two-seat fighter with clearly extended afterburner. Altogether 480 machines left the manufacturing, among them approx.. 25 per cent with dual control. With its Hughes MG-13 fire-control equipment should serve those particularly as insurance for the case, which had not been up to the F-102 to the requirements. After an extensive test routine with up to 50 machines on the bases Edwards, Eglin and Otis were equipped altogether 17 relays with the F-101. Into their active assignment, which in the USAF to approx.. 1968 (afterwards with the USANG to approx. 1982) and in Canada to approx.. 1985 lasted, went through the machines extensive enhancement of combat capabilities measures. Thus they were equipped for example starting from 1960 with the Mb-1 genius, an air-to-air rocket with atomic warhead. The model First impression: I had gotten the kit low-priced with Ebay, and the reasons why I for him lay not least in the recommendations of some model construction amateurs which decided this kits much praised. This praise is justified majority also, the kit knows some weaknesses however nevertheless up. The details are anyhow excellently shown, a good cockpit with very good seats, driven out Airbrakes at the trunk, sunk engravings! Altogether the kit consists of two silver-grey frameworks and a framework with the cockpit glazing, whatever can be represented opened. The clear cover for the search headlight underneath the cockpit is likewise present. My kit originates as said from Ebay - from a "collector" this name actually does not earn. The Decals was stored the whole time over wrongly and was directly drained. But in addition later more. The decals lets two machines represent: * F-101B 95-MC of the 60th Fighter Interceptor Squad in Hansonfield, Massachusets * CF-101B of the 409th Sqaud "Nighthawk" the Royal Canadian Airforce in CAFB Comox, British Columbia I decided for the Canadian machine. This left the manufacturing in the financial year 1957 as a F-101B 85-MC and carries the s/n 57-0286. At the Canadian Air Force it carried the identification 101010. Building: The assembly is interesting....very interesting. Above all the building nose gear is very "strange": one does not have to be stuck the chassis leg as normally into a finished pit, but one builds quasi the pit around the leg - and this also still in a very early manufacturing phase (caution thereby nothing breaks off!). This whole part comes finally into the trunk without cockpit. This is slid into the finished trunk - and as with this method to expect is: it does not fit in the back and in front. In particular at the instrument panels much may be cut off, so that it can be introduced. Otherwise the building is simple. The wings require something putty, also I stuck the "rocket pit", which is swivelling at the original, drew afterwards verse lease ELT and an engraving. According to my opinion the gap is with me opened itself everything else as realistic. Besides a swivelling part tempts to again and again plays - and at the end one breaks it off. The afterburner thrust nozzles are shown very good, require however some grinding work however are worthwhile themselves! Larger problems prepare however the tail unit at the tail as well as the spreizklappen at the fluegelhinterkante. From the building guidance does not follow in both cases, in which angles/which position the parts must be attached. The horizontal tail unit has a clearly positive dihedral with the Voodoo. Besides the horizontal tail unit at the model prevents the excursion of the vertical stabilizer, since the recess at the model is too small. With a small cut this is however repaired. The chassis is likewise very well detailiert. The machine can be armed with two Falcon and/or two genius luft-Luft-Raketen, whatever obtain a good impression. I attached the main landing gear, the auxiliary tanks, Airbrakes as well as the spreizklappen however only after applying the Decals. Model photos are here particularly helpful! Lacquer finish: The Canadian CF-101B flew in the start time with a painting to nature metal, which yielded later by (also in the USA usual) the air defence grey. At the end of their service most machines flew even in a black lacquer finish. The lacquer finish is relatively simply, there in colored. The landing gear bays were green squirted after the masking with tape with tape, main gear sliding doors and the Airbrakes at the trunk as well as the insides of the opened spreizklappen at the wing red. The cockpit received a black glare shield, with the same color to radome was also squirted. The orange seal at the cockpit glazing as well as the "Niedervoltformationsleuchtstreifen" (??) were painted with water color. For the Decals I covered the model with a layer for shining clear lacquer. Decals: The Decals - a history for itself. As already above mentioned these had been wrongly stored. I saw already with closer look these in any case would break, after a test with a needed Decal did not show myself this suspicion also than correct. In hope the Decals still to save to be able I sprayed several layers clear lacquer up, which helped however unfortunately nothing. The decals divided itself in the water into dozens of individual parts, one could even in parts hear the breaking. A genuine agony this parts was to be applied afterwards at the model, particularly with the two long strips at the trunk along. Problem was besides, which I could not use a softener, since this let the small parts up-swim directly and me in the exact positioning obstructed. I must say in addition, that the Decals am outstanding cleanly printed and to softeners am not needed actually at all. At the end of the torture lasting several hours the model with matte clear lacquer was sealed. General impression: A good kit from from the box a marvelous model Voodoo "charms" leaves itself - for me in addition, an example like it with Ebay not to run should.
