1/48 Mauve P-40E Conversion

Gallery Article by Bruce Bell

This started as a trip through the scrap box, while foraging for some other part; I came upon the Aeromaster P-40F conversion with the shortened tail for Mauve P-40M/Kittyhawk III. I thought about chopping the nose off of an Otaki P-40 and grafting it onto the AMT P-40F when I hit on the idea of just chopping the tail on the Mauve kit.

That’s pretty much all there is to it, remove the section including the Mauve rudder and replace with the Aeromaster tail and rudder. The only other thing needing correcting is the rounded exhausts from AMT kit and a new windscreen. (Now replaced after these pictures were taken).

Paints were Testors with highlights from different mixes of artist’s oils. Decals are Super Scale, wheels and cockpit details are True Details.

I do find it hard to believe that no model manufacturer has attempted an accurate up to date model of the earlier P-40’s both the B/C and the E. This would be a perfect subject for Accurate Miniatures or Hasegawa to offer. (hint, hint!) I’m sure it’s a subject that would sell more than one copy to any modeler.
