Monogram’s 1/48th scale F-100D built OOB: still a great kit. While it has some minor fit problems and raised panel lines – typical of eighties vintage Monogram kits - until the Trumpeter kit appeared it was the only decent entry in this scale. I painted the natural metal surfaces with Floquil Bright Silver and then polished them with a soft cloth. The aft engine area was masked off and painted with Testors Aluminum, then streaked with Model Masters Burnt Iron to give that burned metal look found on F-100s.

The decals are from an older Microscale sheet, and represent the real aircraft, #56-3176, as it looked in 1959 when assigned to the 474th Tactical Fighter Wing at Cannon AFB, New Mexico. The boarding ladder is from the “spare parts” bin.  I opted to build the kit with the gun bay, which is reasonably detailed, open.

All in all this was a fun build and would be a good addition to anyone’s collection of 1/48th scale US Century Series aircraft models.
