This diorama
was actually done several years ago but I've finally taken some decent pictures
of it recently. The plane is painted with "Pewter" Rub-n-buff. Cleared and then Aeromaster decals applied. Leading edge of the wing root was reshaped for the early B variant (then abruptly covered it in snow!) Exhaust stacks were drilled out. Control surfaces cut and refitted. Weathering was done with artists’ oils and pastels. The damaged underbelly is accomplished with lead foil. Antennae is "invisible" thread found in sewing supply stores. The snow is made from Sweet-n-Low artificial sweetener. It's a chemical, so bugs apparently won't eat it! (Kinda ironic that some humans will) Some
interesting details: If
you look closely, you can see oily footprints on the wing where the pilot exited
the cockpit. If you look even closer you can see where he slipped getting down!
The base was shaped from styrofoam board and balsa strips were added around the
edges and stained to match the wood base. Again, this was done several years ago so there may be a few details that I’ve overlooked. But you get the idea. Steve
