So
there I was rummaging around my local model shop, wondering what to build next,
when the rather large box of Airfix’s Lightning F6 caught my eye.
The
first part of this project involved ‘upgrading’ the kit ejection seat, this
I found particularly enjoyable and the result really paid off – I used
milliput for the seat cushions and straps, stretched sprue and fuse wire for the
buckles and 5-point clasp, and painted using citadel miniature paints – the
rest of the model was built pretty much out of the box.
The
main kit was painted with Humbrol enamels – I firstly painted the basic
colours, then a light dusting of the main panel lines with a darker shade,
lastly a nice dark wash to define the very crisp and recessed panel lines. I
used Johnson’s Klear (Future Floor Polish) to seal the paintwork before and
after washes, and to seal the decals, and Citadel varnish to seal the final
paint job.
I
can thoroughly recommend this kit for anyone wanting a faithful representation
of this classic jet aircraft.
I
was keen to replicate the box art depicting XS903 operating from RAF Binbrook
with the fierce teeth and low-visibility markings (bit of a contradiction there
I suppose!)
