This is my first attempt at building the big Thud. Overall I think the kit is very nice. Trumpeter does a very nice job in making these big models. I've built a number of the 32nd scale trumpeter kits including the NA-10N/AW and the Flanker. I've found that all the trumpeter kits have common features and common problems. Rite off the bat there are usually scratches on the fuselages that must come from the mold. The F-105 wasn't to bad, only a few that can be sanded out very easily. However the Flanker had a large number of scratches and seams that had to be sanded. The kit is relatively easy
to build and the parts go together very well. However; there are a couple major
problems with this kit. First the landing gear is terrible. I knew
there would be a slight problem just dew to the size of the landing gear, but I
made the mistake of not using an aftermarket set. The kits landing gear is
just not sturdy enough to support the kit properly. Second Intake covers
are a must. In building this kit I purchased the Verlinden cockpit set and the BlackBox set. After taking a good look at the two I decided to use the BlackBox set which has much better detail. For the decals I decided to do this kit as "Cherry Girl" from the 357th TFS. I used the CuttingEdge Modelworks decals (CED32047). I could not find any reference photos for this particular aircraft so I had only the reference sheet from the decals to use for the paint scheme.
In doing my research
for the build I ran into a bit of a problem. The decal sheet called for
a light gray bottom. All the photos I came across on the web had the
aircraft done with white bottoms. I hope the decal sheet was
correct. I used Model Master enamels for my base colors: FS 34079,
FS30219,FS34102 and FS36622.
I decided to do a
medium-weathering job on the kit. I used a combination of pastels and
enamels for the wash.
Overall, I am fairly
pleased with the end result.
