1/48 Revell P-51D Mustang

I started to build this one for a quickie project; that is, until Meteor’s Dave Klaus advertised a NMF webinar.  After learning about the basics of NMF (natural metal finishes) I purchased some Alclad II paints and primers and decided to practice on my already assembled P-51 D.  My airbrushes and I got used to working with the lacquer based Alclad II and it went on very well.  I used some diluted oil paint to highlight the wheels and the exposed lower engine.  I only had a couple of the metal colors and only used aluminum but varied panel shades by masking with newspaper strips and wet sanding with 2400 and 12,000 grit pads.  The shading didn’t show up in the pictures but that’s probably camera operator’s error.

Since this was a test project I decided against doing a known P-51D and used Blue Angel blue on the spinner and tail. The national insignia went on very well with some Microset solution.

Thanks to Rafe Morrissey, Dave Powell and Floyd Werner who gave out such great information during Meteor’s webinar; I also attended the F9 Panther webinar and look forward to future events!
