1/48 Tamiya P-51B Mustang

This build marks my return to the hobby of building models.  I took about a 5 year break, and decided to pick back up about 6 weeks ago.  I completed a few unfinished kits before starting a new project, and chose this 1/48 Tamiya P-51B as my first fresh start.

The model was built completely OOB, aside from some belts made from masking tape and speaker wire.  I wasn't too focused on building a perfectly historically accurate subject, just a good looking model for my first new project.  I have ARC to thank for my results, as I spent several weeks researching new-to-me techniques and methods.  I also found myself using the search feature on the forums for tips every single step of the way. This was my first time using a double-action airbrush, as well as my first attempt with pre-shading, Future coats and flat coats, washes, and any sort of weathering.

I used a combination of Tamiya, Aeromaster, and MM paints - all acrylics. I started out with preshading with Tamiya flat black, then the topside was painted with Aeromaster US Dark Green, and the bottom surfaces received Aeromaster Light Grey. After a coat of Future it was on to the decals.

I decided to just go with the kit decals for the "OLE-II", with lackluster results. The decals fell apart on me, but I was able to salvage them for the most part. I blame it on the fact that the kit has been sitting in my stash in the attic for more than 5 years, oh well! After another coat of Future, the bird received a sludge wash using a mix of Tamiya flat black and brown. Tamiya Smoke was used for the MG and exhaust stains, and the painting was finished up with a layer of Polyscale flat. Paint chipping was done with a Prismacolor Metallic Silver colored pencil, and she was complete!

In conclusion, with the exception of the disastrous decals, I'm quite pleased with the kit. I think it's common knowledge that Tamiya kits practically build themselves, and this one was no exception. I'm glad to say I'm excited to be back in the hobby and you guys should be seeing alot of me around here in the future!
