Cavalier is a company out of Australia.  They have a very limited product range, but what they do have.....has impressed me.  They have two 1/48 engine sets that I'm aware of....one for the 1/48 Hasegawa Bf-109's and one for a 1/48 Tamiya Fw 190 F8.  But lets have a look at this set.  The set is cast in a slightly soft injected resin with no visible air bubbles in the resin.  The molding is crisp and detail is quite good....as good or better than Aires.  I did not do any sample fitting of the parts due to the extensive cutting involved in such test fitting, so I can't accurately comment on fit.  But I must say the detail of the set's parts is very impressive....as seen by the pictures below.  One little detail I enjoyed is the numbers on the side of the engine block.....this tiny detail is often forgotten with these DB601 resin engines.  The serial numbers are raised on this set's engine, but not by much, so they should look correct when painted up. Eighteen exhaust stacks are included for those of us that loose parts like this in the carpeting under our modeling desks.  There is no hinge part for displaying the upper cowls in the open position on the model, so these upper cowls can be laid on the ground or a piece of plastic scratch built to secure these cowls to the top of the engine in the open position.  The boxart shows a picture of a finished model with the set installed.  Take note that the panel below the engine is still attached....this struck me as odd, because this engine has complete and very good detail even on the underside, but there is no resin panel included for the cowl under the engine.  One option (for the brave at heart) is to remove this underside engine cowl and flip it over to lay on the ground, so the full engine can be exposed.  But this option would require a bit of extra effort beyond the directions included in the kit.  Having this underside cowl hanging in it's hinged position would look the best but the lack of detail on the inside of the underside engine cowl would show.  I'm pleased I bought this set for an upcoming project as I feel it is an excellent set.

This review set was purchased from North American Hobbies.
