This new decal sheet from Cutting Edge Modelworks includes markings for three different 1/48 P-51D Mustangs (two of these are different versions of the same plane, so technically it's only 2 aircraft). The first aircraft is a P-51D-5-NA Mustang flown by Lt. Charles E. Weaver with 362nd FS of the 357th FG out of Leiston, England in late 1944. This particular Mustang is very famous and was flown by Lt. Aval Roberson until he completed his tour of duty, then Lt Weaver took over the plane. There are subtle differences in this plane depending on who was the pilot of this plane. This is the earlier P-51 and doesn’t have the fin fillet on the upperside of the rear fuselage before the tail, so if your kit comes with the fin fillet…..you’ll have to cut it away and fill in the hole. |

The
paint scheme on this aircraft is overall RAF Dark Green with RAF medium Sea Grey
on the underside. The top and bottom of the wings and top
of the tail surfaces had white stripes on them that were
overpainted and these these stripes might faintly show through the paint (the
instructions includes pictures to explain this further).
The nose art is applied to rear half of the nose and includes a reclining
naked blonde lady and the nose art decal comes with a white decal to place under
the noseart decal to avoid colour bleed through.
Below the nude noseart is the hand written yellow script "Passion
Wagon". The prop spinner has red and yellow stripes. The forward edge of
the engine cowl has a red and yellow checkerboard stripe.
The white code letters on the side of the rear fuselage are “G4 A” with a
blue and white national insignia between the letters.
The tail has yellow serial #'s 413691.
On the lower canopy rail is the hand written script with the pilots name
"Pilot C E Weaver" and there are 8 kill markings on this Mustang at
this time. |

The noseart decals are delicate and two are included for each plane in case you mess up the first ones. Exacting instructions are included on how to prepare and install these decals…..read these instructions carefully to avoid disaster. Apparently these noseart decals are very thin and need special care, but once installed they will look very accurate and realistic. The nose art decals are printed on a one piece decal sheet, so you’ll need to cut the decal free from the rest of the decal film…..patience is the key here. The noseart decal is beautifully printed with fantastic detail and lovely shading. The second aircraft is a P-51D-5-NA Mustang flown by Lt. Arval Roberson with 362nd FS of the 357th FG out of Leiston, England in the fall of 1944. |

The lower canopy rail is a darker green than the rest of the
aircraft...possibly indicating this canopy was repainted or replaced and
there are 8 kill markings on this Mustang at this time although one photo
does show 6 kill markings. It is believed this photo showing 6 kill
markings is a retouched photo and is therefore not accurate.
The third aircraft is a P-51D-20-NA Mustang flown by Lt. Arthur R. Bowers with 334th FS of the 4th FG out of Debden, England in February of 1945. The paint scheme on this aircraft is overall silver in appearance and has a red nose and prop spinner and olive drab anti-glare panel. The nose art is applied to rear half of the nose and includes a reclining brunette lady in a 1940's bathing suit and the nose art decal comes with a white decal to place under the noseart decal to avoid colour bleed through. Below the sexy noseart is the hand written red with black outline script "Sweet Arlene". The prop spinner has red as is the forward part of the engine cowl. The black with red outline code letters on the side of the rear fuselage are “QP S” with a blue and white national insignia between the letters. The tail has black serial #'s 463223. The lower canopy rail is silver colour with 6 kill markings on the canopy rail. Again.....I will refer you to the special instructions mentioned for the noseart decals earlier in this review....these instructions apply to the noseart decals for this aircraft as well. The decals were flawlessly printed and in perfect registration and the clear carrier film is trimmed very close to the crisply printed colored areas. You get enough stencils and national insignia for one aircraft. |
