-------------------------

Here's a review of a new 1/48 sheet from Afterburner Decals, with markings for the USAF F-16 East Coast Demo Team from Shaw AFB, South Carolina.

Jets included:

  • 940048 2006 Primary / 2005 Primary Late
  • 923923 2006 Secondary
  • 900806 2006 Secondary / 2005 Secondary
  • 923904 2005 Primary Early
  • 910353 2004 Primary
  • 910376 2004 Secondary
  • 930534 Brison Phillips 2000 Primary Tribute Jet

The decals are sized for the Hasegawa kit.

The decals are in-register, clear and are beautifully printed. Many of the badges are 2 piece decals, ensuring good registry. There are 3 decal sheets included: main large one, smaller one with white backgrounds for badges and serial numbers, and a small sheet with the badges printed by Archer Decals.

The color instruction sheets have 4-view drawings to assist in decal placement and the paint schemes, including the elaborate travel pods. FS numbers are provided, and modeler notes point out tips on specific decals. Weapons notes and stencil/strength plate markings are illustrated. Information is also included on the mission of the Air Combat Command's demo teams.

You can make 2 complete jets from this sheet.

Special thanks are given to:

Brian Phillips, Adrian Lang, Billy Caizada and Christopher Williams.

Here is a post on the ARC Afterburner Decals' Forum by Scott Brown:

Here's some stuff that didn't make it in the instructions, but might be helpful

1) Travel pod. The one in the Hasegawa kit is backwards....or upside down or something. Sand off the door hinge line and rescribe the line. If you are mounting it on the aircraft, you have to relocate the tabs to the opposite side. If you are going to display it off the aircraft, its easy to make the 2 mounting lugs from tiny solder stuck into tiny holes drilled in the pod. I debated about the pods because having the markings done was expensive, but the "Demo" jets look funny without them, and it's the only thing to hang off one. The pods look awesome once done up.

2) Archer decals. These things work GREAT, but they are finicky. The carrier film is VERY thin, and they will fold up on you at the slightest whim. They work best if you trim them in large solid pieces. For example, if you trim the "Let's Roll" around the sword, the small pieces will fold up, and you'll never get them back. Just cut things out in a continuous circle or square....the carrier film totally disappears once dry.

The Demo Team went to a "Fancy" looking shaded badge last year, and the colors and "look" are different from the regular 20th FW badges. Same rule....the Archer badges look great. Use plenty of water to slide them around.

The markings on the L sides of the travel pods (where the pilots names are) fit best if you apply the white slug, and use the AF LOGO/ACC badge together with the pilot's names, but use the Viper East logo separately. You have to use the yellow shading for the names along with the AF logo as 1 piece, or you'll never get it to align correctly.

3) Crew names. Apply the black first, then the yellow shadowing. Remember the shadowing goes towards the rear of the aircraft behind the black letter. Let the black dry completely, and use plenty of water and a brush to align the yellow shadowing. It takes some deft alignment, but the result is great. Putting the yellow on first makes it look funny. Let it set pretty good before using any solutions, 'cause you don't want it to move at all once you get it where you want it. The yellow shadowing is kinda hard to see sitting there on the sheet because of the lt. blue background, but looks great along the black lettering.

This sheet retails for $15.00 and is available through http://www.afterburnerdecals.com
