Scratch knife scriber
--------------------------------

Like most modellers, I've had a strong fear of scribing panel lines. Recently a friend in my local Modelling Club showed me a very cheap and very effective scriber. This unit's total cost is under US$5. The blade is a "scratch knife blade" inserted into a plastic "calligraphy handle". These can be found at artist stores or drafting stores. There are two basic rules to scribing....always scribe the parts before any assembly...and always try to use some sort of straightedge for your scriber to follow. But remember...before you can rescribe the panel lines, you must sand off the old raised panel lines.

The bottom item in this picture is an eraser template for drafting. It is very thin stainless steel and can be bent around round items such as fuselage hales etc.

The blade slides in and out easily for quick replacement "when" or "if" it becomes dull.

Place it against the straight edge and scribe away as if you are drawing a line with a pencil....it's that easy.

After one pass the scribed line is quite clean with a tiny ridge along it's edges.

A quick sanding with 400 grit sand paper and then 600 grit paper, removes the slight ridge from the scribed line. Going over the line very lightly for a second time helps to clean up the line, but it's best to check the line to see if you feel this is necessary.
