Making your own books

Kodak / Ofofo.com Photo Books

I recently discovered the hard cover photo book offered by Kodak / Ofoto.

I thought it was a great idea to preserve photos and add captions. The photos are printed on archival paper and the book has a window-cover to partially display your first photo. The size is 10.25 inches by 9 inches. It can be used for showcasing real aviation and model photos, but non-aircraft possibilities are endless.

The cost for 20 pages (10 pages double sided) was around $30 USD. You can get up to 40 pages (20 pages double sided). Compare that to getting 20 5x7 prints and placing them in a photo album. At anywhere from $1-3 USD for each print, the prints alone could potentially cost as much or more than this book.

One must upload the photos to an Ofoto album before making the book. That could be a negative (no pun intended) if your pictures are stored elsewhere. However, I uploaded them pretty quickly using their screen that gave me up to 25 slots to put in file names.

Creating the book is easy….just choose a cover color, and then the layout format of each page. Simply drag and drop the photos from your picture palette at the bottom. I did not see a way to rearrange the page order though. Only way I could change that was reshuffle the photo selection for each page.

The book is saved a project in your account, so it is useful to order more or have a starting point for another book.

I made 2 books – one for each of the Massachusetts Air National Guard units I visited for photo shoots. I carefully considered the photo that would be first, and be seen through the window. I added a dedication at the beginning and simple caption for each photo that listed the date and location of the photo.

I hope this gives you an idea for another option for displaying photos.
