After some time
building my 1/72 Italeri F100D Supersabre, I decided to also make a ladder into
the cockpit, as I find it a very nice accessory. Then I saw an internet picture
of very nicely done ladder and I began to realize this idea.
The first step for me was to create a technical drawing from pictures of real
aircraft with a ladder. For this I used AutoCAD software.
After redrawing the
ladder itself with ACAD lines I deleted pictures and over my lines I finally
drew the right 2 view technical drawing of the ladder, with all right angles and
equal distances between ladder steps, as needed.
Because in ACAD I set the dimensions of all the plane to “real” scale 1/1,
the ladder had to be then scaled to “my” 1/72 scale. Then I added also some
dimensions, so as I could control it, after coming out of my printer. (I printed
it directly from ACAD.)

Then I started to build it. Both
sides of ladder I made from copper (telephone) wire of 0,4 mm diameter, bended
according my drawing and glued by CA glue. Then seven steps joined the sides
together. The last thing was to make a hook on the top. It was made from thin
aluminum, cut and bent to the proper shape with a piece of plastic 0,5x0,5 mm as
reinforcement.
The last things were little pieces, where the ladder touches the side of
aircraft fuselage. I made it also from bent thin aluminum. Everything was glued
with CA glue.
So it was done.
Then I decided to give it to my
internet friend, Radek Typlt, who has his Supersabre almost finished. He then
painted the ladder and took pictures for me before and after painting. You can
see the results.
The dimensions on drawing are also in 1/48 – for those, who don’t like the
ladder in the Monogam kit or just want to make their own.
