India Independence Day

Another excellent kit from Hobby Boss with Indian Air force (Navy in this case) decals.  I could not believe the level of detail on this kit that was perfect in all respects of fit, surface detail and quality of decals.  This model was built out of the box and dons the numbers of IN157/077 – W of the 300 Sqn., INS Vikrant in the 1960s.  The Sea Hawks served with the Indian Navy till the early 80’s when they were replaced with the Hawker Sea Harrier FRS-1.

The build was pretty straight forward, and the single tone dark sea grey looks fantastic with pre-shading.  Acrylics were used for the base coats.  I also traced the panel lines with a .3mm pencil to darken them.  Decal application was also no effort and the model was finally sealed with a gloss coat…..so I was pretty elated with the kit sitting pretty on my work table when my heart sank……The spelling of “Indian Navy” was wrong on the decal supplied…I don’t know how I never caught this, but it was too late…..So my “Inidian Navy” Sea Hawk now sits on the display shelf with it’s tail hidden pretty well next to the Sea Harrier – FRS 1 that replaced it in actual service.

Waiting to build the Classic Airframes Sea Hawk in the 48th scale…..with the wings folded of course!!

Happy Independence Day. Jai Hind!
