Yep, that’s right! I said the Monogram T-28. After several years of collecting aftermarket parts, reference materials, photos and a lot of procrastination, I started work on this project about six months prior to Roden releasing their all new tooled T-28 family. This has happened to me on other projects, so I should be used to it by now.

Aftermarket items include the Black Box cockpit and “C” tail conversion with tailhook. The engine is from Quickboost, to which I added push rods and spark wires. The canopy is from Squadron Products and the wheels are True Details. The decals are from Aeromaster.

I was going to use the Lone Star resin gear wells (nose and main), but in the end I decided to scratchbuild them instead.  I also dropped the flaps, opened engine panels and scratchbuilt exhaust stacks.  After comparing photos of the real A/C to the kit and aftermarket landing gear, I noticed that the nose gear was backwards.  At this point I decided to scratchbuild the landing gear using styrene and metal tubing.  This worked out to my advantage as the resin pieces had added a lot of extra weight to the model.

The figures are from the parts box and I used Model Masters paint over Tamiya primer. The “tarmac” is 400 grit sandpaper and in the upper left hand corner you will notice the emblem celebrating the 100 years of Naval Aviation.

This was not an easy build due to the age of the kit and the mods that were required to get the aftermarket items to fit, but I am happy with the results.

Enjoy the photos.
