My first
contribution to ARC is F4U-1C from VF-85 (CV 38 USS Shangri-La), Lt. Joe D.
Robbins, May 1945.
For Christmas/Chanuka
I have bought me an airbrush and compressor. Because I did not want to ruin some
nice and expensive model, I went to a second-hand model shop and for less than
7USD I have bought an almost 30 year old Hasegawa kit of the F4U-1D. I wanted to
build it OOB, just to start learning, how to use my new tools, but then I
realised I can learn something more and train my skills. So I sanded off
the raised
panel lines and rescribed them (at least most of them). Then I realised,
that the kit decals are not usable anymore, so I started to look for some easy
scheme, that I could paint with my new airbrush. I liked the lightning on the
tail of plane of Lt. Robbins, but then I had to convert F4U-1D to F4U1-C.
Because this should have been a cheap weekend build, I limited the research to studying two or three pictures and made just a
few changes. Other than that, I only scratch-built the seat belts, that are not visible anyhow and
added brake lines and antenna wire.
Now, I have
something that looks like a Corsair. It is not the best model in my
showcase, but it was quite a fun build that and I collected some nice
experience, all for just a few dollars. Highly recommended for all of us
not-so-skilled modellers!
Happy modelling,
Matouš
