This new decal sheet from Cutting Edge Modelworks includes markings for two different 1/48 P-38 Lightnings with noseart with 3 versions of one of these P-38's....giving you 4 different P-38 posibilities..

The first aircraft is a P-38H-5-LO, 42-67077, "Mountain Ayers" flown by Capt Jerry H. Ayers of the 55 FG/38 FS out of Nuthampstead, England in December 1943.  The code letters on the side of the fuselage are CG*Q.  The kill markings include red umbrellas.  The paint scheme for this aircraft is the olive drab scheme with olive drab on top and grey on the underside.  The nose art is a lazy hill Billy laying against a tree stump with barrel of moonshine at his feet.  There is also white text below the noseart that reads "Mountain Ayers"The artwork for this aircraft has a white decal to go underneath the noseart decal.

The second plane is a P-38L-5-LO, 44-27132, "Ready Maid" flown by Capt. Phil McLain of the 8 FG/36 FS in Auguast 1945.  The code letter on the side of the aircraft and the tail is a black M.  The paint scheme for this aircraft is baremetal silver.  The nose art is a topless black haired beauty.  There is also  text beside the noseart that reads "Ready Maid"The artwork for this aircraft has a white decal to go underneath the noseart decal.

You actually get 3 versions of this aircraft as it appeared at different times during it's career.

The noseart decals are delicate and two are included for each plane in case you mess up the first ones.  Exacting instructions are included on how to prepare and install these decals…..read these instructions carefully to avoid disaster.  Apparently these noseart decals are very thin and need special care, but once installed they will look very accurate and realistic.  The nose art decals are printed on a one piece decal sheet, so you’ll need to cut the decal free from the rest of the decal film…..patience is the key here.  The noseart decals are beautifully printed with fantastic detail and lovely shading.

The instructions are clear and include views of each aircraft and an extra 2 pages of text instructions and one page of line drawing showing the placement of painting masks is included with a fair bit of info about both the planes as well as helpful tips for decal application.

A very nice decal sheet and  sure to please the lucky 300 people that manage to buy one of these limited edition sheets.

I would like to thank Cutting Edge Modelworks for providing me with this review sample.
